What is Prosthodontics?

What is Prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.  It is also called Prosthetic Dentistry, and is focused on the replacement of missing teeth and missing tooth structure.  Prosthodontists provide treatment from the simple to the complex.  They are experts in diagnosis and treatment planning and are the “Quarterbacks” in coordinating complex treatment involving multiple specialists.

What is a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists are experts in the restoration and replacement of teeth.  They make smiles look beautiful and function the way they should.  After completing four years of dental school, Prosthodontists receive an extra three years of specialized training in an American Dental Association (ADA) accredited graduate program.

Prosthodontists are the original “Smile Make-Over” artists.

Long before the advent of “Cosmetic Dentistry” (there is no recognized specialty in cosmetic dentistry), Prosthodontists were restoring beauty and function to mouths ravaged by disease, trauma, aging, and wear and tear.

The Smile:

Many people do not realize how important a great smile and a comfortable bite is…until they lose it.  A poor or unattractive smile, because of missing, broken, crowded or discolored teeth has a negative impact on your confidence,  self esteem, comfort and health.
Do you smile with your lips together or your hand over your mouth?  Are you embarrassed about the appearance of your teeth?  Have you stopped stop smiling or laughing, because you do not want others to see your teeth.  Family, friends and co-workers may think you are unhappy or just plain grumpy, because you don’t smile.

Do you feel the appearance of your teeth is holding you back in your career?  Do you think that people are judging your upbringing, social status or intelligence because of the appearance of your teeth?

Right or wrong, “people”, friends, family, co-workers, and superiors at work make these judgments all the time, sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously.  So what you feel is real.

Does this describe you or a loved one?  If it does, then Prosthetic Dentistry can help.  The great smile that Prosthetic Dentistry can create will change how you feel about yourself.  It will restore your confidence. You can laugh and smile again (or maybe for the first time).  Well executed Prosthetic Dentistry can restore your confidence and change your life.  We do it every day!  Schedule an appointment with

A Comfortable Bite:

What good is great smile if the bite is not comfortable?  You won’t be smiling for long.  Do you realize that the average person eats 2 or 3 meals a day and may have several snacks?  Do you realize that you swallow 1,200 times per day, and each time you do, your teeth come together?  Do you  wear a complete denture or removable partial denture that is slipping, pinching, rocking, or rubbing and constantly making your mouth sore?

Maybe you leave your denture or partial denture in your pocket or purse, because of the irritation.  If your bite is not comfortable, you experience constant aggravation or pain;  and that is nothing to smile about.  If this describes you or a loved one, then Prosthetic Dentistry can help.
